Mazda’s Origins

The Mazda Motor Corporation was founded in 1920 in Hiroshima, Japan. It originally started as an artificial cork manufacturing company called Toyo Cork Kogyo Company, but its name later changed to the moniker we know and love today. Its name is derived from the term “Ahura Mazda,” which represents the Zoroastrian God of Life.

Mazda Develops First Rotary Engine

In 1963, German engineer Felix Wankel developed the very first rotary engine which Mazda is known for today. This type of engine revolutionized vehicle performance, due to its small and light build, quiet and smooth operation, and three-sided rotor.

Mazda Breaks World Record

One Mazda vehicle, the Mazda MX-5 Roadster, made the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling two-seater sports car. Mazda sold nearly a million models of the MX-5 Roadster, which has since evolved into the modern-day Mazda MX-5 Miata.
